Loaded structures
Structuren die bij deze oefening worden belast. Geen percentage en geen exclusief doelwit.
The external rotators of the shoulder generate force to rotate the arm outward against gravity and external resistance. The load can be adjusted via dumbbell weight, number of repetitions, range of motion, and execution control.
Performance
The written instructions take precedence, even when images are shown.
Lie on the non-targeted side. Support the head comfortably. Keep the upper arm of the targeted side along the trunk and bend the elbow to approximately 90°. Use a dumbbell that allows for controlled execution.
Keep the elbow of the targeted arm bent and close to the trunk. The forearm is in front of the abdomen. Maintain a comfortable, stable position of the wrist and forearm, and prevent the trunk from rotating backward.
- Step 1: Keep the upper arm still against or right next to the trunk.
- Step 2: Rotate the shoulder outward and move the forearm upward in a controlled manner while keeping the elbow approximately in the same place.
- Step 3: Only go as far as you can control the movement from the shoulder without rotating the trunk backward.
- Step 4: Lower the dumbbell back down to the starting position in a controlled manner.
- Step 5: Repeat the movement with the same control for the desired number of repetitions.
- Range of motion
- Use a comfortable and controllable range of motion. Do not increase the range of motion by rotating the trunk backward or moving the upper arm away from the trunk.
- Tempo
- Perform both movement directions in a controlled manner. Avoid momentum; a controlled return phase helps maintain position and load.
Common mistakes
Rolling the trunk backward to create additional range of motion.
Allowing the elbow or upper arm to move noticeably away from the trunk.
Using a dumbbell that is too heavy, causing the movement to accelerate or technique to change.
Lowering the dumbbell back down in an uncontrolled manner.
Forcing range of motion at the expense of comfortable, controlled execution.
Possible dosage
Contextuele richtlijn bij deze oefening. Geen patiëntvoorschrift, geen programma en geen universeel juiste dosering.
This is a contextual guideline, not a universal prescription. Choose resistance, volume, and range of motion based on training goal, experience, technical control, and load response. Increase the load when the chosen repetitions can be performed with good control and appropriate effort.

Easier or more challenging
Beschrijvende aanpassingen binnen deze oefening en gerelateerde oefeningen. Geen moeilijkheidsscore en geen rangorde.
Make harder
- Make the exercise more challenging by, for example, gradually increasing the dumbbell weight, performing more repetitions while maintaining technical quality, or utilizing the available range of motion in a controlled manner. Change one relevant load variable at a time when you want to accurately assess the response.
Make easier
- Make the exercise easier by using a lower weight, performing fewer repetitions, or temporarily training within a smaller comfortable range of motion. When external resistance is still too heavy, the movement can first be practiced with minimal or no additional resistance.
Goals

KrachtBelangrijk beoogd doel
Targeted resistance exercise for training strength and load capacity of the external rotators of the shoulder.
Clinical application
Contexten waarin deze oefening kan worden toegepast. Dit is geen behandeling, geen aanbeveling en geen noodzaak.
The exercise can be used when targeted and easily doseable loading of shoulder external rotation is relevant. Within rehabilitation, resistance, volume, and range of motion are tailored to the individual load capacity level and the response during and after loading. The exercise itself is not a treatment protocol, and suitability depends on the broader clinical context.
Points of attention
Descriptive points of attention, not absolute prohibitions.
- Adjust resistance, range of motion, or volume when execution no longer remains controlled or symptoms clearly increase. Unexpected, severe, or persistently worsening symptoms are a reason to reconsider the load and, when appropriate, have them professionally evaluated.
